Greek Connection: Andrew’s Greek Language Journey
When the idea to start teaching Greek online first crossed my mind, meeting people like Andrew started becoming the dream. I didn’t know back then if I would make that dream come true, it was a goal I was working hard to accomplish, I didn’t know if I would succeed and hadn’t told anyone. But I felt the need to communicate with the Greeks of the diaspora living in the USA and Australia.
For the first time in our history, the Greeks who immigrated to all the edges of the world could communicate in real-time and for free with the Greeks who live in the country and this, even though we take it for granted today, would be a dream for our ancestors.
I wanted to experience this magic. To share ideas and help the Greeks of the diaspora get in touch with our language and culture. Also this, for me, would be an expression of love and help for the country I love so much, this country has suffered a lot.
Some months later, Andreas sent me an email. I was super excited to receive his email and we arranged an online coffee to talk about what he needs and how I could help him.
When we started our coffee in Zoom, he told me that his origins are from Rhodes, Symi and Cyprus, he had just got married and, in case he became a father, he wanted to pass his heritage to his kid. He had already started learning to play the bouzouki and wanted to take up Greek.

We agreed to start together.
I was thrilled! I had met my “first Greek-Australian” but also I was impressed because, for the first time, I met someone so serious about preparing himself in case he becomes a father.
I loved this.
The years passed and now Andrew is there where he had been working to be. And I want you to meet him in this interview where he speaks about the importance of roots to create the wings for ourselves and future generations.

Λοιπόν Αντρέα, πες μας λίγα πράγματα για σένα.
So, Andrea, tell us some things about you.
Είμαι από την Αδελαϊδα, στην Αυστραλία, και μένω στα προάστια. Έχω μια μικρή επιχείρηση real estate στην οποία και εργάζομαι, και λατρεύω απόλυτα αυτό που κάνω. Απολαμβάνω να βλέπω ταινίες, να παίζω μπουζούκι, να παίζω ποδόσφαιρο, να κάνω πολεμικές τέχνες και να περνάω χρόνο με την οικογένειά μου. Έχω επίσης μεγάλο πάθος για την αυτοβελτίωση-πάντα ψάχνω τρόπους να βελτιώσω όλους τους τομείς της ζωής μου. Το να μένω δραστήριος είναι μεγάλο κομμάτι του ποιός είμαι.
I’m from Adelaide, Australia, and live in the suburbs. I own and run a small real estate agency, and I absolutely love what I do. In my free time, I enjoy watching movies, playing the bouzouki, football, martial arts, and spending time with my family. I’m also really passionate about self-development—always looking for ways to improve in all aspects of life. Staying active is a big part of who I am.
Ποιά ήταν η σχέση σου με την ελληνική γλώσσα πριν ξεκινήσουμε τα μαθήματα μας;
What was your relationship with the Greek language before we started our lessons?
Είμαι τρίτης γενιάς Έλληνας της Αυστραλίας, έτσι “μπήκα” στην ελληνική γλώσσα σε μικρή ηλικία μέσα από το ελληνικό σχολείο.
I’m a third-generation Greek Australian, so I was introduced to the language at a young age through Greek school.
Γιατί ένιωσες την ανάγκη να αρχίσεις μαθήματα ελληνικών;
Why did you feel the need to take up Greek lessons?
Έχω πολύ μεγάλο πάθος για την κουλτούρα και την κληρονομιά μου. Όταν έμαθα ότι θα γίνω γονιός, ένιωσα τη μεγάλη ανάγκη να ξεσκονίσω τα ελληνικά μου ώστε να μπορέσω να τα μεταφέρω στην επόμενη γενιά. Είναι πολύ σημαντικό για μένα να κρατήσω αυτή τη σύνδεση ζωντανή.
I’m very passionate about my culture and heritage. When I found out I was going to become a parent, I felt a strong need to brush up on my Greek so I could pass it on to the next generation. It’s really important to me to keep that connection alive.

Πόσο καιρό σου πήρε να αρχίσεις να νιώθεις άνετος με το επίπεδό σου στην κατανόηση και την επικοινωνία της γλώσσας;
How long did it take you to start feeling comfortable with your understanding and communication level of the language?
Όσο πιο πολύ εξασκείσαι, τόσο πιο γεμάτος αυτοπεποίθηση γίνεσαι-είναι τόσο απλό. Με τον καιρό, έγινα πολύ πιο άνετος, ειδικά με τους διαφορετικούς χρόνους. Η Έφη έκανε τη διαδικασία πολύ πιο εύκολη και είχε πολύ υπομονή μαζί μου.
The more you practice, the more confident you become—it’s as simple as that. Over time, I became much more comfortable, especially with the different tenses. Effie made the learning process so much easier and was always very patient with me.
Ποιές ήταν οι μεγαλύτερες δυσκολίες που αντιμετώπισες;
What were the main difficulties you faced?
Μια από τις μεγαλύτερες δυσκολίες ήταν να καταφέρω το αρσενικό και το θηλυκό σε κάποιες φράσεις.
One of the biggest challenges for me was mastering the masculine and feminine forms in certain phrases.

Πώς το ξεπέρασες;
How did you overcome it?
Τα έγραψα και το έκανα συνήθεια να το κάνω επανάληψη μέσα στην εβδομάδα μου. Επίσης έκανα practice να μιλάω με την γιαγιά μου, το οποίο με βοήθησε πάρα πολύ να γίνω καλύτερος.
I wrote them down and made it a habit to revise them weekly. I also practiced speaking with my yiayia, which really helped me improve.
Ποιό είναι το νούμερο ένα πράγμα που αγαπάς στην Ελληνική γλώσσα;
What is the number one thing you love about the Greek language?
Αγαπάω το ότι είναι μια από τις παλιότερες γλώσσες στον κόσμο. Είναι τόσο μοναδική, με πλούσια ιστορία που την κάνει πραγματικά ξεχωριστή.
I love that it’s one of the oldest languages in the world. It’s so unique, with a rich history that makes it truly special.
Είσαι ένας πολύ πετυχημένος άντρας, ένας high performer με υψηλή συναισθηματική νοημοσύνη. Πιστεύεις ότι είναι σημαντικό για την προσωπική εξέλιξη να μένουμε ενωμένοι με τις ρίζες και την κληρονομιά μας;
You’re a successful man, a high performer with high emotional intelligence. Do you think it’s important for personal development to stay connected to our roots and heritage?
Απόλυτα. Είναι πάρα πολύ σημαντικό για όλους εμάς που ζούμε στο εξωτερικό. Οι Έλληνες είμαστε υπερήφανοι άνθρωποι και είναι τόσο σημαντικό το ότι κάνουμε ό,τι καλύτερο μπορούμε για να κρατήσουμε και να μοιραστούμε την κουλτούρα μας με τις μελλοντικές γενιές. Οι πρόγονοι μας έφτιαξαν αυτό που είμαστε εμείς σήμερα, και οι Έλληνες έχουμε προσφέρει πολλά σε μέρη όπως η Αυστραλία, οι ΗΠΑ, και ο Καναδάς. Είναι υπέροχο το πως οι άλλοι αγκαλιάζουν την κουλτούρα μας. Ας συνεχίσουμε να προχωράμε, να εξελισσόμαστε και να κρατάμε την κληρονομιά όσων ήταν πριν από μας. Όπα!
Absolutely. This is especially important for those of us living abroad. Greeks are a proud people, and it’s so important that we do our best to preserve and share our culture with future generations. Our ancestors shaped who we are today, and Greeks have made incredible contributions in places like Australia, the US, the UK, and Canada. It’s amazing how others embrace our culture. Let’s keep thriving and carrying on the legacy of those who came before us! Opa!
